Description
St Mary's Building of the University of Sunderland is a Grade II listed structure located on Hind Street in Sunderland. Originally built as an infirmary, it later served as a Primitive Methodist College until around 1880, and subsequently as St Mary's Roman Catholic school. At the time of listing, it was in use as a polytechnic building. The building was constructed between 1822 and 1823 by Ignatius Bonomi, with pediments added around 1900.
The building features brickwork in garden wall bond with a painted ashlar plinth, rusticated quoins, and dressings, topped with a graduated Welsh slate roof. The right return and rear are made of limestone rubble, with 20th-century small brick additions at the back. It stands two storeys high with a window arrangement of 2:5:2, where the end pairs project beneath the later pediments. The tall windows have wedge stone lintels and projecting stone sills, now fitted with three pivoting 6-pane lights. There are keyed architraves around the round windows in the pediments, and a moulded eaves cornice runs along the top. A central painted stone panel with a lost inscription is located on the first floor. The low-pitched H-plan roof has inserted ventilators. The left return features three windows and steps leading up to a central door set in a plain doorcase, while the right return has a 20th-century door.
