Description
The wall behind St Mary's Building at the University of Sunderland is a Grade II listed structure that dates back to around 1822, with some alterations made in the 20th century. This wall, made of rubble limestone with roughly rounded coping, encloses the yard of the former infirmary. It runs from the south, along the west, and part of the north boundary. There is brick blocking where a former door was located on the west side, and small hatches with wooden doors, likely used for coal delivery, are present. The central section of the wall has been slightly altered, probably during the construction of the Edinburgh Building of the Polytechnic to the south around 1960, which is not listed. The wall is included for its group value.
