Description

Westburn House, now St Anthony’s Secondary School, is a mid-19th century house constructed of horizontally-tooled ashlar with an ashlar plinth and dressings. The roof is of graduated Lakeland slate, featuring ashlar chimneys and cast-iron crestings. The house has two storeys and a basement, with a regular facade of three bays by three windows. A central porch has angle pilasters and a cornice, featuring a half-glazed door, overlight, sidelights, and flanking windows, all with glazing bars and panelled aprons. The sash windows on both floors have glazing bars and shaped stone sills with rusticated voussoirs, the central one being larger. A single basement window is present on the right-hand side. Giant pilasters at the corners, and framing the central bay on the left return, are connected by a floor string and a wide eaves cornice with dentils and modillions. The hipped roof has side consoles to two front dormers with hipped roofs and slate-hung sides, and a single similar dormer on the returns. Tall corniced ashlar chimneys are present at the right end and at the left of the ridge, topped with tapered square yellow pots, and an ornate ridge cresting runs along the roof. The interior contains an 18th century style dogleg staircase of four flights with decorated tread ends, a grip handrail wreathed at the foot, carved turned balusters, and a moulded dado. Fire screens have been inserted on the landings. There are six-panelled doors in architraves, and a strapwork ceiling in the left rear ground-floor room.
