Description

This pair of lodge cottages dates from the 18th century and is located at the entrance to Downhill House in West Boldon. The eastern cottage features rendered stone with a pantiled roof and stands two storeys high, although the second storey is very low. It has a central door framed by a stone architrave, with a sash window to the left and a blank wall to the right. Above, there are two small windows. The gable facing the road includes a large Gothick window, a decorative band that extends along the front eaves, and a crenellated parapet. The roof is hipped at the other end, and there is a chimney at the rear. The western cottage, also made of rendered stone, has an empty Gothick window in the gable, a decorative band, and a crenellated parapet. This cottage is currently derelict and lacks a roof.
