Description
Downhill House is an 18th-century house located on Downhill Lane in West Boldon. It is constructed of rendered brick with stone quoins and features a Welsh slate roof. The building has a simple block plan and stands two storeys tall, with five windows that have lost their glazing bars and are framed with architraves. The central entrance consists of a six-panelled door set within an architrave that includes brackets and a pediment, and there is a band at the first-floor cill level. The mansard roof is topped with stone coping on moulded kneelers and has four brick chimneys at the ends. Inside, there is a later staircase balustrade, doors, and chimney pieces, while the window shutters remain intact. Historically, Downhill House served as an early Aged Miners' Home, purchased by the Boldon miners shortly after the formation of their Association in 1894, but it has since reverted to private ownership.
