Description
West Boldon Hall is a large house dated 1709, featuring the Fawcett arms above the door and incorporating part of an earlier structure. It is built of sandstone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof and has a simple block plan. The house has two storeys and five windows, with a central door on the west side that has a moulded architrave and an open segmental pediment supported by brackets. The windows are 24-pane sashes with broad glazing bars, except for the rear, which has cross windows on the ground and first floors to the north, a central round-headed staircase window with narrow glazing bars, and on the south elevation, there are 4-light ground and 3-light first floor mullioned and transomed windows at the east end. A string course runs at first floor level, and there is a moulded eaves cornice. The roof is hipped with swept eaves and features a central rectangular well. At the rear, there are two massive stone chimneys with three setbacks, along with two others on the side ridges.
Inside, the ground floor is adorned with bolection moulded fielded panelling, except in the kitchen at the southeast. All chimney pieces are bolection moulded, with most located in the corners of rooms. The kitchen features a flattened Tudor-arched stone lintel at the chimney breast. There are early 18th century niches, a corner cupboard, round-headed arches, architraves, doors, and hinges. The staircase has a small open well, decorated tread ends, and balusters with turned and graduated twist sections. The kitchen door is made of plank and batten.
