Description

This is a mid-19th century terrace of eleven houses, numbered 37 to 57, situated on Beach Road. The buildings are constructed of red brick with a hipped slate roof. They are three storeys in height and feature stone lintels and a stone eaves cornice. Each house has a three-bay entrance, framed by a stone doorcase with a straight entablature. The terrace is generally uniform in appearance, though numbers 37, 43, 51 and 57 incorporate two-storey bay windows. Several of the houses – numbers 43, 47, 49, 51, 53, 55 and 57 – have had their windows replaced. Number 53 has been clad in stone to the front elevation and has a new roof. At number 57, the cornices to both the doorcase and bay window have been covered with wood. Records from the 1851 Census Enumerator’s Return show that no houses were occupied, whereas eleven houses are listed in the 1861 return. The earliest Ordnance Survey map of 1855 shows approximately three-quarters of the terrace completed, including gardens.
