Description

West Beacon is a navigational aid built in 1832 by John Turnbull at a cost of £60 to replace earlier 18th century beacons. It is designed in the form of an obelisk, with the lower third constructed of ashlar stone and the upper two-thirds made of brick. The structure is topped with a pyramidal stone cap. It serves as a guide for ships entering the River Tyne.
