Description
The Church of Saint Nicholas is a parish church built in 1882. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a roof made of flat tiles, with a tile-hung belfry at the west end topped by a small lead-covered spire. The church has a nave and a north aisle consisting of four bays, a chancel with two bays, and a lady chapel located on the south side of the chancel. The windows and arcades are decorated, with the east window being a five-light stained glass design, the west window a three-light, and all other windows being two-light plain leaded glass. This church was built approximately 20 years after the sinking of the shafts at the colliery to serve the new community.
