Description
Scots House is an early 18th-century house located on the south side of Newcastle Road in West Boldon. The house is constructed of ashlar stone with a Welsh slate roof, and follows a simple block plan with a rear wing. It is a two-story building with five windows. Features include a plinth, four square stone steps leading to a central door with a pedimented Tuscan doorcase, horizontal bands at the first-floor and cill levels, a stone cornice, a blocking course, and an open pediment over the three central bays. The roof is hipped.
Inside, the house contains an open-well staircase with two turned balusters per tread, a ramped handrail with a spiral curtail, and a complete balustrade on both the wall side and along the landing. One ground-floor room has painted and grained trompe-l'oeil panelling and an original carved chimney piece. Adam-style ceilings are present in the staircase and one principal room. The original door and window woodwork remains complete.
