Description
Scots House gatehouse, walls, gates, and gate piers were built around 1890 for H L Pattinson, a chemical manufacturer. The structure is made of brick with stone dressings and features a flat-tiled roof. It stands two storeys high and has three bays. The central carriage entrance is made of stone, featuring a three-centred arch with a keystone and scroll above, supported by Tuscan pilasters. Above the springing, plain pilasters extend to a first-floor band and support urn-shaped finials. On either side of the entrance are small two-light mullioned windows, while the first floor has a central four-light window flanked by three-light windows, all made of stone. The stone-coped Flemish shaped gables at both ends and above the arch, both front and rear, are topped with ball finials. There are small gable-end windows, and the front gable displays the Pattinson arms in stone. The building has two tall brick chimneys. Two serpentine walls lead to two square corniced piers, each topped with lions holding shields. The structure features continuous cornices and coping, along with wrought iron gates.
