Description
The Thermal Syndicate Offices, built around 1906 for the Thermal Syndicate, are located on the east side of Neptune Road in Wallsend. This building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a graduated Lakeland slate roof, showcasing a Free Baroque style. It stands two stories tall and has nine windows, with gables positioned over the entrance in bays four and five, as well as over the two right end bays.
The entrance features an elliptical-headed surround with a double door and overlight, framed by a prominent Ionic doorcase that includes paired, banded pilasters, a dentilled cornice, and a broken segmental pedimented hood with a carved soffit. The ground floor has wood mullioned-and-transomed windows with six and eight lights, while the first floor displays cross windows, particularly those under the gables which have stone mullions and transoms. The right gable features double keystones that rise to a tall segmental pediment containing a roundel. Above the central gable over the door is a tall consoled pediment with a round-headed keyed window. The gables are topped with ball finials, and the hipped roof is accented by ashlar-corniced brick ridge chimneys.
Historically, the Thermal Syndicate was established in 1903 to develop the technique of fusing quartz for the production of acid-and-heat-resistant vessels. The building is listed for its industrial-historical interest.
