Description
The Market Woman is a sculpture created in 1966 by Hans Schwarz, commissioned by J Seymour Harris and Partners. The sculpture is made of bronze and has a green-black color. It stands on a square bronze base, which is now placed in a flowerbed. The statue represents a barefoot female figure from Roman times, dressed in a long robe that reaches her calves and has sleeves covering her arms. A shawl wraps around her head, concealing her hair. She gazes straight ahead, with her right arm raised to support a large circular woven basket on her head. The basket holds four live hens that lean out over its edge.
