Description
The Social Services Area Office, originally a vicarage, was built in 1903 on land given by G.B. Hunter. It is constructed of snecked sandstone with a plinth and ashlar dressings, topped with a plain-tiled roof. The building has two storeys and attics, featuring a four by three bay layout along with a low one-bay pent extension on the left. The main entrance is a part-glazed double door set back under a keyed arch in the third bay. The first bay has tripartite sash windows, the second bay features canted bay windows, and the fourth bay has sashes above the door, all equipped with glazing bars. The right side of the building has canted bay windows flanking a blind ground floor and a first-floor sash. All windows have projecting stone sills and flat stone lintels. There is a floor band and a modillioned eaves cornice. The building also includes two hipped dormers with tripartite sashes, one of which has been altered, and one with smaller casement windows. Tall corniced chimneys complete the structure. It is included partly for its group value with the Church of St. Luke.
