Description
The North Pier with crane attached and lighthouse is a structure located at the south end of Tynemouth Pier Road, built between 1854 and 1895, with partial rebuilding in 1909. The engineers involved were W.A. Brookes until 1858, J. F. Ure from 1858, and P.J. Messent from 1862, working for the Tyne Improvement Commissioners. The pier is constructed from rock-faced stone and features a north shelter wall, along with an iron crane. The lighthouse is made of painted rendered ashlar and includes a glass lantern. The pier extends approximately 900 meters in length. The lighthouse is tall and tapered, situated on a round platform, and has a recessed door on its south side. The crane is noted but is not considered of special interest.
