Description
The Collingwood Monument and guns, built in 1845 with the guns added in 1848, is located on Tynemouth Pier Road. The base and plinth were designed by Dobson, while the statue was created by Lough. Constructed from sandstone ashlar and marble, the monument features a high wide base with slit openings on the sides and a door at the rear. The stepped side walls lead to a wide flight of steps. Atop the base is a high pedestal that supports a colossal figure of Admiral Collingwood, depicted in a draped cloak. A plaque on the south side of the base commemorates his victory at Trafalgar alongside Nelson and notes that the memorial was funded by public subscription. Flanking the steps are four guns that originated from Collingwood's ship, the Royal Sovereign. Historically, Collingwood was born in Newcastle, and his family lived in Chirton, North Shields. The statue was positioned to be visible from both the sea and the river.
