Description
The New York War Memorial is a roadside memorial dedicated to the First World War, built in 1921 by W. H. Endean. It is carved from sandstone and features a three-stepped base topped by a heavy plinth, a shaft, and a Celtic Wheel Cross. The shaft displays a wreath in half relief on the front, with palm leaves at the corners. The inscription on the cross shaft reads "To the Glorious Dead."
On the front face of the memorial, the dedication is carved: "ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF THE DISTRICT IN MEMORY OF THE BRAVE MEN WHO FELL IN THE WAR 1914-1919 (NAMES) PASS NOT THIS STONE IN SORROW BUT IN PRIDE FOR THEY DIED THAT YOU MIGHT LIVE."
