Description
The Anderson tomb, located about 23 metres south of Tynemouth Priory Church, is a chest tomb dating from around 1714. It commemorates members of the Anderson family who died between 1688 and 1834. The tomb is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features four corner and two side rusticated pilasters. The side and end panels are decorated with incised squares and low relief designs, including interlace, ribbon-tied bones, and a winged skull. The table top has a moulded edge. Inscriptions on the tomb commemorate Gerrard, who died in 1714; Thomas, buried at All Saints in Newcastle, who died in 1783; and Matthew, who lived in Russia and was buried in Smolensky cemetery in St. Petersburg, who died in 1814. The corners of the slab were noted to be chipped at the time of the survey.
