Description

4-9 Swinburne Place is a terrace of six houses dating from approximately 1820 in Newcastle upon Tyne. The construction is primarily English garden wall bond brick, with an ashlar basement and ashlar dressings. The roof is covered in Welsh slate. The terrace comprises a basement and three storeys, with some houses having attics. Each house has two bays, with a two-bay return to the right side of No. 4. The front doors are six-panelled, each with an overlight featuring radiating glazing bars, set beneath elliptical brick arches. No. 9 on the left has a restored, pedimented timber doorcase. The windows are sash windows, with most retaining glazing bars, and feature sill bands to the ground and first floors, with projecting stone sills on the second floor. The right return of No. 4 has steps leading to a deeply-recessed six-panelled door within a Tuscan doorcase, with side and overlights all contained within a wide elliptical arch. A long stair window above this doorway also features sash windows with glazing bars.
