Description
The piers from the Hospital of the Virgin Mary are located at the Royal Grammar School in Newcastle upon Tyne. They date back to the 13th century and are made of sandstone. There are two octagonal piers, each standing on a square plinth with a moulded base. The piers feature a nail-head band on their moulded capitals and each has two courses of springing with chamfered arches and side arches. In the 18th century, the Grammar School occupied the buildings of the former hospital, which were demolished around 1844 when Neville Street was laid out.
