Description

Carlton Terrace is a terrace of eleven houses, built around 1838 and believed to be designed by John Dobson. The terrace is located on the north side of Jesmond Road in Newcastle upon Tyne. It is constructed of English garden wall bond brick, with a painted ashlar ground floor to the left-hand pavilion, and painted ashlar dressings. The roof is covered with Welsh slate.

The terrace is three storeys high, with 7 houses ranging from 2 to 5 bays, totaling 32 bays. The central six bays and the groups of four bays at each end project slightly. The central section is plain, while the outer pavilions have pilasters. The front doors are of eight panels, except for the door at No. 33, which has been replaced; they have overlights in architraves. Sashes are set within wedge stone lintels, most retaining glazing bars. Stone lintels project, except on the second floor, which has a sill band. Recessed brick panels are located below the first-floor sills, and a first-floor band is present. The end pavilions have a second-floor band, along with giant corner and central Doric pilasters, topped by paired gutter brackets and an eaves cornice. A gutter cornice sits between the pavilions. Banded brick chimneys rise from the low-pitched roof. The left return features three bays, with steps leading to a 20th-century door set within a flat Doric doorcase, which has side lights. The windows on the outer bays of the return are set within Doric doorcases, with tripartite arrangements.
