Description

This is a circa 1835 building, likely designed by John Wardle for Richard Grainger. It is located on the east side of Clayton Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, and includes numbers 2 and 4 Nun Street. Constructed from sandstone ashlar with a roof that is not visible, the building is four storeys high and originally comprised 3 and 9 bays. The ground floor features 20th-century shop fronts. The upper floors contain sash windows, with some retaining glazing bars, set in plain reveals. The left pavilion has architraves and cornices to the first-floor windows, and architraves and bracketed sills on the second floor. A second-floor band and entablature is topped by a prominent cornice, followed by a top cornice and blocking course. The right three bays of the building were rebuilt and are not of historic interest.
