Description

The Former Whickham View Schools, now a community centre, was built between 1936 and 1938 and designed by F. W. Harvey, the Building Surveyor for the City of Newcastle Education Committee. The building is primarily constructed of Flemish garden wall bond brick with concrete dressings and features metal windows and a felt-covered tower roof. It has an X-plan layout and is designed in the Art Deco style.

The central octagonal tower is supported by concrete piers with inlaid granite bands and is situated over vehicle and pedestrian archways, which are topped with triple soldier-course lintels. There is a curved balcony above a tall window with a stepped head, and ornamental glazing bars are present in the lantern windows above, along with a banded lower section leading to a low, hipped roof. Each side of the tower has two stepped outer bays that contain tall stair windows and higher round stair windows at the ends. The classroom wings are single-storey and feature twelve windows that project forward, with diagonal cloakrooms at the front linking to gymnasium blocks that are set back. A swimming-pool wing is located further forward on the right side.

Most of the doors are original and have geometric glazing bars in their overlights, and all windows are also original. The building has flat roofs. Inside, the original glazing remains on the doors, and there is horizontal oak panelling in the entrance halls. Twin concrete spiral stairs lead to the tower, which features a compass panel on the ceiling.
