Description
Thorntree Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1790. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with large quoins and features a Welsh slate roof with rendered chimneys. The building has two storeys and three bays, along with a low one-storey extension on the right. The central boarded door is set in irregular alternate-block jambs and has a renewed thin painted lintel. The flanking windows also have similar lintels, all three of which have been inserted to gain height. The three first-floor windows have painted tooled stone lintels, and all windows feature projecting painted stone sills. The farmhouse has banded end chimneys. It is built on the line of Hadrian's Wall, with a fragment of the wall exposed a short distance to the west. The name "Thorntree" comes from a thorn tree that grew on this fragment. At the time of the survey, the building was empty and boarded up.
