Description

The building comprises a chimney mill and mill house, later used as a golf club and now offices. It was constructed in 1782 by Smeaton and originally built as a 5-sailed mill. The house is of brick construction with painted ashlar dressings. It is two storeys high with three bays. A front addition, dating from 1892, features a bracketed canopy and raised surround, incorporating the inscription NGC (Newcastle Golf Club) on one bracket and the date 1892 on the other, flanked by windows within raised stone surrounds. Similar stone surrounds are present for the single and tripartite first-floor windows, and the house has a battlemented parapet. The mill structure above the house is weatherboarded, with a wooden gallery, and is octagonal in shape, featuring bargeboarded gables to the windows in alternate bays, and a parapet. The mill was in use until 1892, then served as a golf club until 1975. The windshaft and cap were removed in 1951.
