Description

Baltic Chambers is a building of early 20th century date, originally offices, situated on the Quayside in Newcastle upon Tyne. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar with grey brick and is designed in an asymmetrical, Second-Empire classical style. It is four storeys high, comprising two bays, with the right-hand bay narrower and featuring a round-arched entrance that leads to an internal flight of four steps and a panelled double door. The ground floor is rusticated and incorporates a shop front with a cellar shute below. The upper floors have sash windows; those on the first and second floors of the left bay are paired, with chamfered reveals and moulded segmental heads. Bowed ornamental aprons are located between the floors. Giant flat pilasters support a quasi-entablature at the third-floor level, which are then rusticated and bifurcated to the top entablature; the sashes on the third floor are set within architraves and are triple in the left bay. The building is listed for its group value with No. 65. At the time of survey, the building was empty and derelict.
