Description

This is a terrace of houses located in St. Thomas' Square, Newcastle upon Tyne. Numbers 2 and 12 were built around 1862, while numbers 4 to 10 date from approximately 1842. The terrace was restored around 1982. The construction uses English bond brickwork for the earlier section and English garden wall brickwork for the later section, with an ashlar plinth and ashlar dressings. The roofs are slate, with brick chimneys, some of which feature ashlar cornices.

The terrace comprises a basement and two storeys, with three bays each. The four-panelled doors have overlights (with glazing bars at number 6) and are centrally positioned in the end houses and in the outer bays of the others. They have raised stone surrounds with prominent cornices and wedge stone lintels. The sash windows have glazing bars, with projecting stone sills on the ground floor and a sill band on the first floor. Number 2 features aprons and architraves, as well as a first-floor band. The end houses feature corner pilasters with ashlar cornices, and pilasters are also present on the left and right returns to St. Thomas’ Crescent and St. Thomas’ Street. Cast iron area railings and gates, with spear-headed detailing, are also present.
