Description
Nos. 34-44 on Pilgrim Street are a group of four shops and houses, now used as shops and offices, built around 1837 for Richard Grainger. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof with brick chimneys. It stands five storeys tall and consists of seven bays, with the outer bays set in pavilions. The entrance to the houses is located in a deep reveal to the left of the second shop. Although the shops have been renewed, the third shop still has its original wide defining pilasters.
The pavilions are defined by giant flat paired Tuscan pilasters, which frame the first-floor windows in aedicules and the second-floor windows in architraves; the right pavilion has tripartite windows on both floors. The central five bays feature window architraves on these floors, with raised cornices above alternating first-floor windows, and a prominent cornice on the second-floor entablature. The third-floor windows are in plain reveals, with pilasters accentuating the pavilions. All windows are sashes, most with glazing bars, except for the central blind bay. The building is topped with an eaves cornice.
