Description
The I'Anson tomb, located in Westgate Cemetery about 50 metres southeast of the entrance, is a Gothic tower tomb built in 1873 by C. Burn of Newcastle. It commemorates W.A. I'Anson, M.R.C.S., L.S.A., and members of his family. The tomb is constructed from sandstone and features a buttressed first stage with marble corner pilasters on the second stage, along with marble inlay panels. On the west side, there is a low relief depicting Christ visiting the sick, accompanied by the motto "I WAS SICK AND YE VISITED ME." The top stage is adorned with four crocketed gables, although the finial is missing. The tomb was erected by a number of his friends on April 16th, 1873.
