Description

This is an early to mid-18th century house built of local mottled brick with a pantiled roof and end chimneys. It is three storeys high with two windows, and is notable for its large proportions. The second floor has Yorkshire lights, while the first floor features small-paned fixed windows with sliding lower parts. The ground floor has early 19th century sash windows with glazing bars, set within wooden architraves, all with stuccoed lintels and stone sills. To the left of the building, two stone steps lead to a 19th-century four-panel door, topped with an oblong fanlight, which is set within a contemporary doorpiece featuring a bracketed cornice. A plaque on the front wall identifies the building as an 18th-century merchant’s house, which originally had a warehouse at the rear. The warehouse is located behind number 19, but has access from the yard of number 17.
