Description
A pair of cottages on High Street West, Redcar, dating from the early to mid-18th century. They are built of rendered random rubble and brick. The roof on the right-hand side (number 46) has a renewed clay pantile covering, while the left-hand side (number 44) has a late 20th-century interlocking clay pantile roof. There is a brick stack at the right end and a rendered stack at the left end. Each cottage has one bay and two storeys. A pair of doorways are centrally positioned, with renewed doors. Number 44 has mid-20th century casement windows in larger openings. Number 46 has two ground-floor windows and one first-floor window, featuring renewed sash windows with glazing bars. A plinth is present, and rendered brick corbelling is visible at the eaves of number 46 (missing from number 44). The interior of number 46 includes beamed ceilings on the ground floor. The roof structure is a coupled rafter design with straight upper collars, arched lower collars, and two levels of spliced and pegged through-purlins; some ties have been removed. Late 20th-century extensions are not considered to be of architectural significance. Number 44 is included on the list primarily for its contribution to the group value of the surrounding buildings.
