Description

These are a pair of cottages located on High Street West, Redcar. Number 48 is dated 1698. The cottages are constructed of dressed sandstone, with a clay pantile roof on number 50 and late 20th-century concrete tiles on number 48. They feature stone gable copings with block kneelers, and a stone ridge coping on number 50. There are rebuilt brick end and ridge stacks.

The cottages are two storeys high, with two windows on each side. A chamfered plinth is visible, and a continuous string course between the floors forms hoodmolds over the entrances. The doorways are located to the right of number 48 and in the centre of number 50, both with Tudor-arched heads. Number 48 has a moulded surround and a renewed door, while number 50 has a chamfered surround and a four-panel door. The lintel of number 48 is inscribed "I G.I. 1698". The windows on number 48 are chamfered mullioned, with a three-light window to the left and a two-light window above the doorway, both containing fixed lights and side-hung casements with glazing bars. The mullions have largely been removed from number 50, and the openings now contain mid-20th century casements. A circular window with glazing bars within a lozenge panel is located to the right of the doorway of number 48. An additional first-floor window has been inserted to the left of number 50. Rear extensions are not of architectural significance.
