Description

Redcar Central Railway Station is a railway station with a train shed, built around 1861 for the coastguard extension of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. It features red brick in Flemish bond with yellow brick and ashlar dressings, and has a Welsh slate roof. The central portion of the train shed is glazed, and there is a later glazed front porch.

The main building is two storeys high and has seven bays, with the three central bays recessed and set-back one-storey side wings. The ground floor has a round-arcaded design with gauged-brick arches above the windows, and hoodmoulds that are continuous with an impost string. The upper windows are similar, featuring bull segment heads, and both floors have cills. There is a projecting central porch with a part-glazed hipped roof and ornamental eaves. The main roof is low-pitched and hipped, with deep eaves supported by paired wooden brackets. The building has four stacks with plinths and cornices, two located on the ridge and two at the ends, with similar detailing on the side wings. The platform elevation has a segmental-arched ground floor with an open centre supported by two cast iron columns. Although all windows have been replaced in the 20th century, the original four-panel doors remain.

The train shed, which covers the platform and adjoining line, is one storey high and features a string course at first-floor level and an eaves band below a moulded cornice. Its hipped roof, made of lightweight jointed iron, rests on patterned cast iron brackets on the station side.

This station is included for its historical interest as the only station in Cleveland that retains its original train shed.
