Description

The Town Clock is a memorial clock tower built in 1913 by John Dobson in Redcar, commemorating King Edward VII. It is constructed from red engineering brick in English bond, featuring faceted rusticated brickwork in the upper part of the top stage. The tower has concrete dressings and a rockfaced whinstone plinth, topped with a plain clay tiled roof.

This three-stage tower is supported by diagonal buttresses that have volutes on shallow bases. Each face of the tower has a round-headed opening with an archivolt, imposts, and a keystone, situated below a frieze. The frieze on each face includes a nowy-headed tablet with scrolled wings; the south side features a bronze plate with raised lettering that reads: "1901 E.R. 1910 IN GRATEFUL AND LOYAL MEMORY OF EDWARD VII REX ET IMPERATOR. ERECTED FROM SUBSCRIPTIONS RAISED BY INHABITANTS OF REDCAR, COATHAM AND DISTRICT."

The middle stage of the tower has round-headed windows with leaded lights set within enriched aedicules. Bartizans with watershots at the angles of the top stage flank the enriched swags below the clock faces, which are set in oculi with moulded surrounds. There are diminutive arcaded bell openings below the eaves. The pyramidal roof is topped with a metal ship weather vane and a compass finial. The Town Clock serves as an important local landmark.
