Description
Dorman's Crescent in Redcar features twenty cottages for aged persons, built in 1931. These cottages are constructed of brick with rendered sections above the sills and have Welsh slate roofs. The design consists of four terraced blocks containing four and six cottages, arranged around three sides of a green. Each cottage is single-storey and includes a projecting flat-roofed bay with a renewed door and a casement window. There is a renewed casement window with a cambered head positioned either to the right or left of the bay, depending on its location in the terrace. The cottages have painted sills and brick quoins, and their hipped roofs feature stacks at the junctions. Notable inscriptions on concrete tablets at the rear of the cottages commemorate their laying: one reads, "THIS STONE - WAS LAID BY - MRS ARTHUR DORMAN - 3RD JANUARY 1931," and the other states, "THIS STONE - WAS LAID BY - THE RT. HON. GEORGE LANSBURY M.P. - FIRST COMMISSIONER OF WORKS - 3RD JANUARY, 1931." These cottages were the first local authority aged persons' homes in England, officially opened in May 1931 as the Sir Arthur Dorman Memorial Homes, and are included for their historical significance.
