Description

This is an early 19th-century cart shed and loft range, with additions from the mid-to-late 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, and has roofs of Welsh slate to the cart shed and loft, pantiles to the other sections, all with stone ridges. It forms an L-shaped plan.

The cart shed and loft section is two storeys high and consists of six bays, extending from an earlier building that formerly connected to the farmhouse gable. The left-hand side features stop-chamfered square piers creating four cart shelters. The first shelter has boarded wooden doors, while the remaining three have partly glazed hit-and-miss ventilators above, with projecting stone sills. A stone platform provides access to a boarded loft door, reached by stone steps beside an adjacent cartshed. The sixth bay projects forward with a short cartshed, featuring a blank side wall and double boarded doors set within a high round stone arch. To the right is a longer, taller cartshed with similar doors. The remaining section to the rear belongs to the earlier building. The interior remains uninspected.

The farm likely served the needs of the growing market created by the nearby ironstone mines developed by the Pease family in the mid-19th century and represents an unusually complete example of a developed farm.
