Description

The Old Schoolhouse, also known as the Parish Stable or hearse house, was built in 1762 by Dr. John Sharpe, the vicar of Hartburn. It features coursed rubble with dressings, except for the tooled squared stone on the west return, and has a slate roof. Designed in the Gothick style, the north front has a projecting three-storey central bay with a late 19th-century sash window below a first-floor two-light window, which has trefoiled heads within an ogee arch and a raised stone surround. Above are round-headed recesses, and the crenellated parapet includes a taller central section with a roundel and ornamental arrow loops. The lower flanking bays have a buttress on the left and a late 19th-century sash on the right, both topped with a stepped crenellated parapet. The rear elevation features a central section with an external stone stair leading to a first-floor door, a tall narrow window above, and a reverse-stepped gable. The right bay has a segmental arch leading to the former hearse house, which is partly obscured by a 20th-century glazed porch, while the left bay contains a boarded door. Various 19th-century sashes and lean-to roofs with reverse-stepped coping are also present.
