Description
Willimontswick Farmhouse is a Grade II* listed manor house dating from the 16th century, likely incorporating earlier elements, and was largely rebuilt around 1900. It features coursed rubble with stone dressings and slate roofs. The building has a double-ended hall-house plan, with narrow towers at the ends of its wings. The hall block and west wing were rebuilt in a neo-Tudor style around 1900, while the original north and south doors to the screens passage have been retained. The front (north) door features an elliptical arch under a square head with a partly renewed hoodmould, while the rear (south) door has more elaborate mouldings and carved foliage in the spandrels. The east range retains its narrow rectangular end towers, each with remnants of a corbelled parapet. The east front of this range has four altered sash windows on the first floor, along with traces of older blocked openings.
Inside, there is a moulded doorway, a newel stair, and a garderobe in the tower, although these details were not seen. The original layout included a central block flanked by four slender towers, similar to the arrangement at Farnhill House in North Yorkshire, and likely inspired by the grander design at Langley Castle. The foundations of the west wing towers were uncovered in the early 20th century during the construction of a tennis court.
