Description

Old Hall is a Grade II* listed manor house located in Barden, North Yorkshire, which may date back to the early 15th century. The building is constructed of rubble with a stone slate roof and features a T-shaped plan, consisting of a hall to the north and a cross-wing at the southern end.

On the south elevation, there are two first-floor windows and quoins. A central six-panel door has an inscription on the lintel reading "M.G. 1831". To the right of the door, there is a four-light double-chamfered window with a hoodmould on the ground floor. The door and other openings have deep stone lintels with herringbone tooling. To the left, there is a two-light casement window set into a blocked doorway. The first floor has 20th-century casement windows and ashlar copings. The end stacks are present, with the right stack being corniced. The right return of the cross-wing features an external stepped stack, with a plinth to its right.

On the east side of the hall range, there is a ground floor three-light 20th-century casement window that replaces a window with three ogee-headed lights. On the west side of the hall range, at the north end, there is a blocked doorway with a four-centred arch and hollow-chamfered arris, along with remnants of another doorway to its right.

Inside, the hall is partially divided by a stud partition. A large fireplace is not visible, but in the hall and the current kitchen, there are richly moulded beams with run-out chamfer stops, as well as similarly moulded joists and visible butt-jointed plank boards in places. The chamber in the southeast corner also appears to have a large original fireplace that is not visible.
