Description

This is a headstone dating from 1783, dedicated to Matthew Dodd. It is made of sandstone and stands 1.5 metres tall. The headstone features a scrolled top and a raised moulded border. There are small reliefs, including a central angel head and wings, a sickle and cross-bones on the right, and a serpent devouring its tail with a book inscribed with the words "LIFE'S BUT A SPAN" on the left. The poetic inscription reads: "GRIEVE NOT FOR ME, MY GLASS IS RUN IT IS THE LORD, HIS WILL BE DONE WHEN CHRIST APPEARS THEN SHALL I RISE TO JOYS IMMORTAL IN THE SKIES." The headstone is located 13 metres south of the Church of St. Mungo.
