Description
The adit entrance of Swinhope Horse Level is located on the south bank of Swinhope Burn and dates from the early 19th century. This lead mine adit portal is constructed from squared rubble. It features a section of walling with an elliptical-arched adit portal and a square locker to the right. Just inside the portal, there are similar lockers on both the left and right sides of the passage, likely used for miners' lamps. Swinhope Mine operated from 1815 to 1872, and the horse level was created to connect with the earlier Whimsey Shaft, which worked the Swinhope or Williams Vein.
