Description
Tone Hall Farmhouse is a house that has been subdivided into two residences. It dates from the 16th century or early 17th century, with alterations around 1800. The building is constructed of random rubble, partly rendered, and features a Welsh slate roof. It is two storeys high and has a double span. The front span was originally a bastle house, with walls that are 4½ feet thick, measuring approximately 60 feet by 25 feet. The original ground-floor door has been blocked on the right side. The house was converted into a five-bay structure around 1800. The central doorway has an overlight with radial glazing bars set in a raised surround, and similar surrounds can be found on the 12-pane sash windows. The fourth bay on the ground floor has been converted into a door with a similar surround, added in the early 20th century. The gabled roof features kneelers and flat coping, with one ridge and two stone corniced end stacks.
The rear span, dating from around 1800, has an off-centre door with six flush panels and a fanlight that has intersecting glazing bars in a round-arched raised surround, complete with a keystone and impost blocks. A similar surround and glazing bars are present on the central staircase window. The two outer bays have 12-pane sashes in raised surrounds. To the right, there is a lower two-bay addition from the 19th century, which features alternating quoins, a 20th-century half-glazed door, and four-pane sashes in raised alternating surrounds.
Inside, the farmhouse contains two- and six-panelled doors, panelled window reveals, and an early 19th-century staircase with fluted newels and turned balusters. The hall arch is framed by a fluted surround and paterae.
