Description
The Church of St. Giles is a parish church dating from the 12th century, with restoration completed in 1884. It features dressed stone and random rubble construction, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The church comprises a nave, chancel, west porch, and a south-west tower. The masonry of the chancel's north wall and the nave is from the 12th century, while most other external elements are Victorian. These include the west porch with a pointed-arched doorway, a multifoil rose window in the west gable, and the south-west tower, which has a square vestry on the ground floor that transitions to an octagonal shape with lancet bell openings and a short octagonal spire.
The three-bay nave has three-light stepped cusped lancets on its south side, while the north walls of the nave and chancel are blank. The chancel's south side features three plain stepped lancets, and the east window consists of three stepped lancets under hoodmoulds. There are also blocked priest's and north doors, likely from the early 17th century, which are square-headed with chamfered surrounds.
Inside, the church has a 12th-century unmoulded chancel arch resting on plain chamfered imposts, and a pointed arch leads to the blocked priest's door. The east window includes shafts and shaft rings. An inscribed stone dating from the 8th century, featuring a cross and the letters ORPE, is located on the chancel's north wall. Additionally, several medieval coffin lids are built into the west porch, along with a plain medieval stoup.
