Description

Carrycoats Hall is a house with elements dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, with significant additions from the early 18th century and the 1830s. The oldest parts of the building are constructed from random rubble, while later additions are of ashlar. The roofs are covered in Welsh slate. The front of the house is a 3-bay design from the 1830s, featuring rusticated quoins. The recessed central bay contains a 6-panelled door with an overlight, set within a possible reused 18th-century architrave. Above the door is a panel displaying the crest of the Shafto family. Narrow flanking windows are set within architraves. Shallow, square bay windows are on the outer bays, each containing 2-light windows in architraves with 12 panes to each light. The first floor has 12-pane sashes with cornices and architraves, and a 2-light window above the door. Similar decorative details are found on the returns, but the rear bay incorporates 18th-century masonry and the remains of ground and first-floor sill bands.

An older building was incorporated into the house to the rear, likely a bastle house, with walls approximately 3 to 3 feet 6 inches thick. Further 17th and 18th-century masonry is also present. Various windows dating to the 18th and early 19th centuries are throughout the building.

The roof is gabled with ridged coping, kneelers, ball finials, and stone corniced ridge stacks.

Inside, the house features an early 18th-century staircase with a broad handrail and turned balusters, along with 2-panelled and 6-panelled doors, and several early 19th-century fireplaces.
