Description
The Church of St Aidan is a parish church dating from the 12th century, with a bellcote likely added in the 17th century. The nave was partly rebuilt in the mid-19th century when the south porch was also added. The building is constructed of dressed stone, with the porch made of ashlar, and features a Welsh slate roof, while the bellcote has stone slates.
The church consists of a nave, chancel, south porch, north vestry, and a west bellcote. The west end has a large offset buttress in the center of the wall, and above it is a gabled double bellcote that slightly projects, featuring square-headed chamfered bell openings. The nave has three bays with two-light Victorian Perpendicular windows. The chancel includes a blocked priest's door and one small 12th-century window on the north and one on the south. The east end has angle buttresses with offsets and a lancet window.
Inside, there is an unmoulded 12th-century chancel arch supported by simple chamfered imposts. A similar arch, which was formerly the apse arch, frames the east end. The chancel is tunnel-vaulted, with deeply splayed 12th-century windows cut into the vault. A plain chamfered frieze, also from the 12th century, marks the base of the vault. There is a shouldered rere arch leading to the east lancet and a door to the loft above the chancel arch.
Notable interior features include a 13th-century round bowl font on a circular stem, accompanied by a 17th-century font cover, a 14th-century stone effigy of a lady, and a medieval grave cover with a foliated cross.
