Description
Marmion's Well, built in 1935, is located immediately to the west of Branxton Village, within a road verge. The well head features an upright sandstone slab about 1.2 meters high with a large round-arched opening. The upper slab is decorated with the outline of a Latin cross and a Celtic interlace design above the arch. The face of the upright slab bears an inscription from Sir Walter Scott's poem 'Marmion' (Canto 6, stanza XXX):
'Drink weary pilgrim drink and pray/For the kind soul of Sybil Grey/Who built this cross and well.'
Inside the arch, there is a round stone basin, and at the base, a rectangular stone basin is set.
