Description

Walwick Grange is a house dating from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century, and reputedly incorporating a medieval pele tower. The construction is of rubble, with tooled stone dressings, and the entrance section and gable facing the garden are ashlar-faced. It has stone slate roofs.

The main building is arranged in an 'L' shape, with three storeys, and a two-storey wing to the left. An early 19th-century gabled entrance section is set into the re-entrant angle, and includes a porch.

The river front is three storeys high and symmetrical, with five windows. A central doorway has been blocked and replaced with a small window, positioned below a tall, round-headed stair window with a flat surround, moulded imposts, and a raised keystone. This is flanked at ground and first floor levels by twelve-pane sash windows in flat surrounds with raised keystones. The second floor has five further twelve-pane sashes with tooled lintels. The roof has coped gables with kneelers, topped with urn finials, and stone gable stacks with conjoined shafts.

The garden front features twelve- and sixteen-pane sashes (one renewed), a porch door with a four-centred head, and a canted bay on the ground floor of the 19th-century section. Two ashlar ridge stacks are on the wing. The left gable of the wing has a blocked segmental-arched carriage entrance.

Inside, an elegant staircase features a curtail step, a wreathed and moulded handrail, and column-on-vase balusters. One ground floor room has a bolection-moulded fireplace flanked by niches, and panelled walls. A cellar is present with a brick barrel vault.
