Description

New Horton Grange consists of three farm cottages built around 1858 for Sir Matthew White Ridley. The cottages are constructed from coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and quoins, topped with a Welsh slate roof featuring stone gable copings and roll-moulded stone-coloured ridge tiles. They are two storeys high, with each house having three bays. The central half-glazed doors are flanked by wide sash windows. The first and third bays on the first floor also have sash windows, with those in the outer and central two bays breaking the eaves under half-gabled dormers that have overhanging hipped roofs. There are eaves gutter corbels and banded ashlar chimneys. To the east of number 3 is a farm manager's house, now a farmhouse, which is not of special interest. Historically, Kelly's directory for 1858 describes the house and farm buildings of the model farm as the most complete and extensive in Northumberland.
