Description
Shittleheugh Bastle is a ruined bastle house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It is constructed from very large blocks of roughly-coursed and dressed stone, with smaller pieces of infill, measuring approximately 42 feet by 22 feet. The walls are about 41 inches thick, with the long walls standing around 6 feet tall, while the gable ends reach full height.
The original ground-floor doorway is located to the right of the center on the long east wall. It features an alternating-block surround with rounded edges and a very large lintel, along with a hole for a harr post and two pairs of drawbar tunnels. There are remains of a porch or possibly a stair tower in front, with the lower parts of rebated jambs that also have rounded edges.
Inside, the bastle has slit windows with widely-splayed reveals in both gable ends, and there are remnants of three similar windows on the long walls. The lower parts of the south wall are boldly corbelled out to support a first-floor hearth, and there are remains of wall cupboards on the first floor.
