Description

Chollerford Bridge, built in 1785 by Robert Mylne, spans the River North Tyne. The bridge is constructed of squared stone and features five stepped round arches supported by triangular cutwaters. The upper parts of the cutwaters are set back and extend upwards as refuges. Below the parapet, there is a band, and the parapet itself has gabled coping. At the north-west end, the bridge ramps down and ends in low rectangular piers topped with pyramidal caps. This bridge was built following the destruction of its predecessor in the flood of 1771.
